Speak to any local farmer and he will tell you that you need heavy machinery to clear the land, prepare, seed and maintain the fields. All this heavy lifting is necessary to have a successful crop. So how can the deer hunting enthusiast even hope to have deer food plots on their property? After all, the cost of these monster agricultural machines is probably well out of reach for the average hunter.
Luckily, you have some more affordable options when it comes to preparing your land for the food plots which will not only bring the whitetails in, but will provide them with nutrition during the times of the year when they need it most. What are these options? You can find all the power and efficiency you need in many of today s ATV s and UTV s.
There are several factors you should consider when selecting an ATV/UTV to prepare your land. The first and arguably the most important item to consider is power. Why is power so important?
In order for you to replace the need for the heavy agricultural machines we spoke about earlier, you will need to use a number of attachments for the ATV/UTV. These attachments come in the form of disc harrows, plows, spreaders, sprayers and mowers. These attachments each have their place in the land preparation and maintenance process and each requires a vehicle which has the necessary power to get the maximum benefit.
You should consider a liquid cooled, 450cc or better machine. Obviously the more power here the better. Beside the attachments listed above, you will also utilize these vehicles to remove large debris from your land. The more power, the heavier the load you can haul at one time. A further consideration is choosing a vehicle which has the best line of attachments to allow you to get the job done has effortlessly as possible.
The attachments can definitely add to the cost of the overall package. To help keep costs in line, most manufacturers offer multi-function implements. Choosing this option not only saves on money, but also saves on storage space. Some multi-function options are plow-cultivator and a mower-spreader. If you were to use these items, the only additional item you would need to get the job done is a harrow.
So what exactly is the difference between an ATV and UTV? ATV s are generally smaller, quicker and more maneuverable than UTV s. UTV s are usually more expensive, longer, most often have a dump bed and are usually able to haul heavier loads. For those of us who have to take into consideration balancing the family budget and can only choose one or the other, the UTV is the way to go.
Creating deer food plots can be long, difficult work, especially if you are starting with a new piece of property. Having the right vehicle to handle the workload will make it go much smoother.
